Vying Games : Trax

Trax is a two player abstract strategy game created by David Smith. It can be played on any flat surface (no board):

  • using identical square tiles
  • with straights on one side
  • and curves on the other

(The tiles are square and have two strings, one with white and one with black colour. If the strings connect opposite sides, the tile is called straights (or cross). If the strings connect near sides, teh tile is called curves.)

The rules of Trax are simple: place tiles adjacent to those already in play such that the colours of the tracks match. The objective is to get a loop or line of your colour while attempting to stop your opponent in their colour. What gives Trax its strategic depth is the forced play rule which allows (or even requires) multiple tiles to be played in a turn.

TRAX was invented in New Zealand by David Smith in 1980 and is now sold and played in many countries.

Trax (which used to be called SuperTrax) is played actually on a board that can in theory expand to infinity (unlimitedly).

There is also a variant called 8x8 Trax where the board can expand to at most 8 rows and 8 columns (this was used to be called Trax).

There are also other variants, with most playable the LoopTrax (where lines do not win, only loops) and Lucky Trax where a die decides which tile a player can place.
