Vying Games : Dodgem

Dodgem is a board game created by Colin Vout first described in the book "Winning Ways For Your Mathematical Plays." Its simple concept yields surprisingly interesting gameplay.

How to Play

Dodgem can be played on different sized-boards: at Vying, it is played on a 5x5 board. Each player controls four cars; the first player's cars are lined along the left column all facing to the right, while the second player's cars go across the bottom row facing up, leaving the square at the bottom-left empty. The cars can only move in three directions: forward, left, or right one space.

The players take turns moving their respective cars, aiming to remove all their cars by moving them off the opposite side of the board (i.e. first player wishes to remove all his cars by driving off the right edge).

Removing all of one's cars is part of a more general winning objective: to be left with no legal moves. If a player at any point in the game cannot move due to his opponent's pieces in the way, he is declared the winner.

Endless Cycles

At Vying, an N-repeat system is put into effect. If a position is repeated N number of times, the game immediately ends, the winner being the player with fewer cars. This is done to counteract the strategy of "ganging up" on a single car in order to force an endless cycle.
