Server Updates

Just a quick post to mention that I updated the server this afternoon. There shouldn't be any outwardly visible changes.

Of the changes you shouldn't notice:

  • Bots refactored. I did a lot of code shuffling, but, if everything went well you shouldn't see any change in bot behavior.

  • Better memory usage. The rails processes have been gradually chewing up more and more memory for a while. Some of that may be a memory leak, but I'm not sure. I've improved memory usage in general, so I should be able to get a better idea if there's a leak or not.

  • Performance improvements. I'm not sure these changes will actually be noticeable or not, but a few operations should be slightly faster now. The most noticeable might be loading Ataxx positions.

I'm going to run Vying Games on this setup for a few days to a week to make sure the code is stable, and then I'll release another game.

Please let me know if you find any bugs!

If you use Firefox, and have been having trouble playing Ataxx, Checkers, or Breakthrough the past couple days, take a look this post on the forums:

Ataxx is much MUCH quicker, especially near the end game.

Great news! I'm glad it is noticeable to someone other than me!

I think I can make some similar improvements that would effect other games -- in particular, Connect6, Pente, Keryo-Pente, and Amazons (not yet released), but the improvement probably wouldn't be as substantial. With the exception of really long games of Connect6, which do feel noticeably slower than fresh games.
